Kicking Ass with Kindness – Williamsburg MMA Celebrates Sixth Anniversary

Mar 12, 2015 by Tanay Warerkar

At Williamsburg Mixed Martial Arts, on Dobbin Street, it’s not about having the buffest body in the ring, it’s about building community and promoting a broad range of personal fitness goals.

Last month, the studio celebrated six years in North Brooklyn, no easy feat considering the neighborhood’s highly competitive fitness industry with Chalk Gym, Quick Fitness and Brooklyn Athletic Club just a few blocks away from the studio.

According to owner, Roger Mamedov, what sets the studio apart is that people recognize his sincere passion for raising awareness about the benefits of martial arts.

“[We] believe in providing a support a supportive and positive community for students and providing a space to improve, relax, reduce stress, and meet personal fitness goals,” said Mamedov, in a written statement.

Greenpoint Women Empowered To Defend Themselves

Jul 11, 2013by Otto Campos

Roger Memedov, owner and instructor of the Williamsburg Mixed Martial Arts (WMMA) wants women to learn to defend themselves. On Saturday, July 20th, he will offer a Women’s Empowerment seminar at his school, all the more important with the recent news of a woman raped at knifepoint less than a month-ago in Greenpoint.

Memedov, a soon to be father, has been giving martial arts instruction since he was 12-years-old and wants every woman, regardless of background, to walk around with the confidence of knowing how to defend themselves.

“It’s like driving a car without car insurance. You’re not going to be too confident. But if you have insurance and God forbid something happens then you’ll be well protected. Self-defense is like car insurance,” said Memedov.

The instructor has developed programs to fit all types of people. Memedov says that 20 to 25 percent of his students are females. The school also has toddler classes (three-years-old to five) and kids’ classes (six-years-old to 12).

Ultimate toddler fighters train at Greenpoint gym

These pint-sized pipsqueaks are a long way from the Ultimate Fighting Championship, but while their fellow toddlers are busy picking their noses and learning their ABCs, they are preparing for combat.

At Williamsburg Mixed Martial Arts school, which is actually on the edge of Greenpoint, kids as young as two years old train to perfect their roundhouse kicks, jabs, and foot sweeps. But how to annihilate adversaries is not the only thing these tots are learning, according to their muscly headmaster.

“We teach them better focus, concentration, and practical self-defense,” said school director Roger Mamedov.

Mixed martial arts incorporates elements of a variety of fighting styles, including judo, Muay Thai, boxing, and jiu jitsu, and is the basis of the wildly popular pay-per-view sport in which two fighters beat the daylights out of each other for five rounds, stopping only if one is knocked or submits.
